Succulent Centerpieces

My friend Elly….who I have known since I was 3…asked me for some ideas for centerpieces made from succulents. So I did that magic I do…you know…Google.

I found this collage of ideas on District Weddings (The Knot, Martha Stewart Weddings, kojo designs)

I love the simplicity of the 2 smaller options. Lined up down the center of a long table they would look great, and could double as favors for guests. The larger option is great for a round table.

I saw this terrarium style one at Off Beat Bride. It would look great with white sand.

This one popped up on Love & Lavender. I love having the table number incorporated.

This is a great way to have the wedding color(s) brought into the mix.

I hope this helps with some ideas. I love how clean succulents can look. All these options are low, so the guests can still see each other and talk, no one is blocked by massive flowers…total bonus. Wedding planning can be so hard. My flowers were one of the few things that I ended up not loving. The idea of succulents is a great one and fits with Elly’s overall taste and love of nature and sustainability. I can’t wait to see what she picks out!

Love succulents mixed with fresh flowers. So pretty and natural. Flora Grubb does it really well. Elly should run up there for a visit. She will leave completely inspired.

I love the look of succulents. It seems like something that I could keep alive. I just don’t know how to arrange them or where to put them to make them look pretty. Do you put these in your house? How do you arrange them?

I am the wrong person to ask. I have zero plant knowledge. But these seem easy?? Maybe??

Meghan, go to a local nursery or even a Lowes, or Home Depot. Buy some small succulents, a small bag of potting soil , and a small bag of pumice. Find virtually an kind of container, a basket, an old bowl, a shoe even!….(try and make sure there is some kind of drainage in your container) place regular newspaper, moss, screen, over holes in bottom of containers. Then place 3/4 potting soil mixed with 1/4 pumice over the above material of your choosing. Remove your succulents from the containers they came in from store. Simply place the root end just barely covering only the end on the top of your soil mixture, and wait. In a matter of a few days to a week it will start and/or continue to root itself. Then as they grow you can clip each one (approx 3-4 inches) from the top of each one, leave clipped portion out on the top of the soil until the clipped end scabs over (2-3 days), and then just poke it into the soil! TMI, sorry, but a very easy plant that is pretty hard to kill! Oh and your soil should for the most part always be fairly dry. Water the new clippings only after you ‘plant’ them. ;)

Thank you so much Elly!! I really appreciate it. I’m totally going to try it out! It does sound easy. Do you water them?

        • Elly

Only water sparingly if you plant cuttings. Or if they are starting to lose their plumpness and sheen.

Thank you Danielle! I have seen a few of the photos of the individual succulents in my magazines. I just took a local class at The Guadalupe River Parks and Gardens, in downtown SJ this morning. Learned a ton! Looks like this is going to be one of the easier parts of planning my wedding, to both, make myself and save money on! I will send pics as I grow my own and ask for opinions in groupings, colors, and containers. I love the natural simplicity and little waste. Environmentally sound is a plus!
